Namesake
Constance Stone was the first Australian woman to qualify as a doctor. In 1884 she travelled overseas to study medicine since the University of Melbourne did not allow women into its medical course. By the time she had returned, she was able to establish a private practice in Collins Street and started a free dispensary for poor women. Her home was the venue for the first meeting of the Victorian Medical Women's Society in 1895.
Constance was described by one of her medical colleagues, Janet Lindsay Greig, as 'the real pioneer' who alone deserved the honour of having started the Queen Victoria Hospital. The medicinal qualities of lavender and eucalyptus are a calming nod to this remarkable woman.
